Legendary India spinner Anil Kumble feels that it is that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli couldn’t hold the World Cup Trophy after Australia crushed their dream on Sunday with a 6-wicket victory. The Men in Blue had an off outing in the most important match of the tournament as Australia outclassed them in all three departments to lift their sixth World Cup trophy at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were the standout batters throughout the tournament and finished as the first and second in the tally of most run-getters with 765 runs and 597 runs respectively.
Kumble, former India coach, suggested that the two batters complemented each other and performed consistently well and it was sad for them to finish on the losing side.
“It is sad that the two of them couldn’t hold the trophy at the end,” Kumble said during a discussion on ESPNcricinfo. “Those two players certainly stood up for India in every moment. It was Rohit giving India the start, and then Virat ensuring that India got the score that they eventually reached,” he added.
The legendary spinner said that reaching the milestone of 50 ODI centuries was massive but the most important thing was to lift the World Cup trophy.
“To get to 50 ODI hundreds is a massive achievement. In all of that, I don’t think any of that would count, but for having that World Cup trophy in your hand,” he added.
Kumble also talked about the crucial role Rahul Dravid played as a head coach and asserted it is not an easy job as he has to be on the road all the time. Kumble played a lot of cricket alongside Dravid and suggested it would be great it Dravid managed to hold the coveted trophy.
“I would have loved to have him hold the World Cup trophy. He has worked really hard, and it’s not been easy. It’s not easy being an India coach. You’re on the road all the time, and the focus is on you. I don’t know yet (if he will continue as the head coach). It all depends on how he wakes up tomorrow morning and then decides,” he added.
