Tottenham are reportedly exploring a long-term deal for midfielder Giovani Lo Celso. A report published by Express claims that Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is believed to be keen on signing a new contract with Lo Celso. The article claimed that Tottenham are reportedly expecting to finalise a new contract for the midfielder. His current deal with the London-based club is slated to enter its final year this summer. According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Lionel Messi had earlier recommended Lo Celso to Barcelona during the last January transfer window. Messi even went on to call his teammate as the best midfielder in the Argentine football team.
Since then, Barcelona have kept their eyes on Lo Celso. His former club Real Batis are also reportedly interested in bringing back the 28-year-old. Besides Barcelona, Premier League giants Tottenham seem to have considered the approval of Messi. As per Tutto Mercato, the English outfit are planning to hand a two-year contract extension to Lo Celso. The club hierarchy may also increase his weekly wages to convince the Argentine to stay in North London.
Before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, Lo Celso enjoyed two spells at Real Betis. The Spanish side were reportedly eager to bring Lo Celso on board last summer. As it did not happen, they came back with a better offer in January this year. Lo Celso, however, chose to remain with Tottenham.
During his ongoing five-year-long spell with the English club, Lo Celso has mostly played for Villarreal on loan. He has featured in 17 Premier League matches for Tottenham this season. He, however, only started in four of those games and spent a total of 464 minutes on the pitch.
Back in January this year, Lo Celso revealed that Tottenham manager Postecoglou played a key role in persuading him to stay at the club. The footballer said, “I was really grateful for his belief in me, so I worked hard and showed every day that I wanted to be here and play. I’ve felt comfortable in training and in the way he coaches. I love his idea of football which gave me the belief that I could find a place in his team,” as quoted by football.london.
In the upcoming summer window, Tottenham are expected to complete the signing of a forward to bolster their attacking unit. Their performance has not been up to the mark this season. After 32 matches, Tottenham now hold the fifth spot in the Premier League standings with 60 points.
